Facebook

By ajmg

Someone sent me this link which is a rant and very biased, rather than a balanced piece of journalism. It does, however, bring up some interesting stuff about the alleged philosophical and political ideas behind facebook.

Yeah this article came from the same guy who said he would never use email again. Which of course is his choice, but that doesn’t do anything to change the situation.

Social capital is a really interesting concept and while we can stand there and get woosy about putting a fiscal value on friendship, we do it all the time when we follow recommendations friends make (e.g. use ‘that’ electrician or buy ‘that’ camera). That said there are some very interesting privacy issues with Facebook; the whole Scoble debacle and I saw Danny is in the Data Portability group – it’ll be interesting to see what they produce.

It’s a pity you can’t see my blog on this whole thing – but it’s currently internal only :(

Yes the guy is not putting forward a measured response to what he believes are the libertarian ideas behind facebook, and he doesn’t get his facts right (they had to put in a correction to one of his claims at the top of the article). Though I was interested in his take on real and virtual worlds – but then you could say money itself is virtual … even though it makes the world go round. Ta for your comment – when are you going to make your blog public then :)
